Summary of Project Theme
The overarching theme of projects conceived and developed by and for DDCC Undergraduate Research Scholars is the isolation of endophytic fungi for the purpose of analyzing their extracts for bio-active secondary metabolites with antimicrobial, insecticidal, and antimitotic properties. With the rise in antibiotic resistance in bacteria, resistance in pest species, agricultural diseases, and cancer, the need for newer, effective compounds is increasing. As this is funded by the NC Space Grant via the NCCCS, we also consider the need for such compounds now that antibiotic resistant bacteria have been confirmed as being present on the International Space Station. Therefore, one of the project objectives is to discovery compounds yet unknown to researchers that may provide effective treatments for a variety of infectious agents. Other project topics may be considered.
